Teach a man to fish

As the saying goes …

“Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. But teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime.”

I believe this explains the deferences between conservatives and liberals. Liberals give the fish away and setup a life time of dependency. Conservatives prefer to teach the art of fishing to setup a life time of independence and self determination.

To offer a quote from Rush Limbaugh …

“Most of liberalism is a concept designed to make its practitioners feel good about themselves. It’s a construct that allows them to reward their good intentions while they ignore the results of their plans and ideas — which are dismal failures.”

That is a really good observation about liberals. They don’t want you to judge the results of their actions, just their intentions. All along they have wanted to bring about this utopia, this socialist experiment to make everyone, as Rush puts, “equally miserable” but it just has not worked and in most cases, failed miserably, as we have seen in New Orleans over the last few weeks.

Democrats have been in power in Louisiana for decades now and the horrors that we have seen in New Orleans are all a product of their intentions, corruption and social experiments.

From the Presidents speech given in Jackson Square, this I think expresses the way conservatives help people become independent and determine their on way.

Tonight I propose the creation of a Gulf Opportunity Zone, encompassing the region of the disaster in Louisiana and Mississippi and Alabama. Within this zone, we should provide immediate incentives for job-creating investment, tax relief for small businesses, incentives to companies that create jobs, and loans and loan guarantees for small businesses, including minority-owned enterprises, to get them up and running again. It is entrepreneurship that creates jobs and opportunity; it is entrepreneurship that helps break the cycle of poverty; and we will take the side of entrepreneurs as they lead the economic revival of the Gulf region.

I propose the creation of Worker Recovery Accounts to help those evacuees who need extra help finding work. Under this plan, the federal government would provide accounts of up to $5,000, which these evacuees could draw upon for job training and education to help them get a good job, and for child care expenses during their job search.

And to help lower-income citizens in the hurricane region build new and better lives, I also propose that Congress pass an Urban Homesteading Act. Under this approach, we will identify property in the region owned by the federal government, and provide building sites to low-income citizens free of charge, through a lottery. In return, they would pledge to build on the lot, with either a mortgage or help from a charitable organization like Habitat for Humanity. Home ownership is one of the great strengths of any community, and it must be a central part of our vision for the revival of this region.

Now I know some will say that the President is just opening the coffers and providing hand-outs and thats true. The difference is the President is trying to provide this relief with the expectation of some results. To give those in need a hand and not just a hand out.
