Sunday Morning Talk Shows - Review
A lot of hurricane stuff, of course. Russert brought up the theory, when talking to
hurricane expert Ivor van Heerden, that the Army Corp of Engineers repaired the New
Orleans levees protected the affluent neighborhoods better and slapped something together
for the levees which protected the poor, black neighborhoods.

Iraq is like Vietnam, how come the rallies keep getting smaller?
While anti-war activists hoped their rally yesterday would be the “largest peace
rally in the nation’s capital since the Vietnam War,” it doesn’t seem they reached
their goal. In order to make the rally seem larger than it was, the BBC and
other new outlets relied on the organizers’ claim that 100,000 turned out. Little
Green Footballs found this picture of the rally at Yahoo and observed that “it looks
like the turnout was much less than 100,000 people.”

Frist and “Insider Trading.” A Primer on This Week’s Scandal
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist is a rich guy. Besides making crazy cardiologist
loot, he came from a rich family, valued at over a billion. His father, Thomas, helped
found Hospital Corporation of America, a company that grew into what is now the nation’s
largest chain of private hospitals. And as you might expect, Bill owned some HCA stock.

Denies Weldon’s Claims In An Able Danger Sideshow
Rep. Curt Weldon’s credibility may have taken a minor hit in yesterday’s Washington
Post with a rather passive denial from National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley that
Weldon gave Hadley a chart showing Mohammed Atta as a member of al-Qaeda either before
or after 9/11. Weldon claimed in his book that he gave Hadley a copy of a chart two
weeks after the attacks, produced in 2000 by the Able Danger team showing the Atta
connection and explaining the data-mining project to Hadley.

MAHER SLIMES THE BUSHES
You’ve no doubt heard or read of the scurrilous tabloid allegations being made
by anonymous attackers about President Bush. Unhinged Bush haters are gleefully embracing
the National Enquirer story and trashing the president. That is to be expected. It
comes with the territory.

As I begin this article, I will say at the outset that I am a Houstonian, and
so may be prone to a certain bias in favor of my hometown. That said, I would contend
that Houston has established a very good reputation by its works, earned through the
character of its citizens.

Brian Maloney has put our New Haven correspondent’s notes on the Dean’s Lecture
Al Franken gave at Yale Law School on Friday evening to good use: “Rolling over.”
Franken has been crowing about having caught Taranto up in what Taranto believed was
a factual mistake he’d made in referring to President Bush’s poll numbers in an appearance
on Hannity & Colmes. In response, Taranto frankly conceded to Franken that he
may have been mistaken. He also has The Best Defense
Take 2On the one hand, we have James Taranto’s approach to acknowledging errors (discussed
below). On the other hand, we have the New York Times’s “never give an inch” approach,
documented in Byron Calame’s extremely interesting Times column this morning: “Even
Geraldo deserves a break.”

Sheehan - A Uniter, Not A Divider
The Sheehan media circus rolled into DC this weekend, and immediately she proved
that she’s united the Democratic Party. They’re united in their desire not to be seen
anywhere near Sheehan.
So their you have it. Have a great week.
