OUR effort in Iraq passed a major milestone today: Our troops are leaving the cities.
Advisers remain in place. Joint patrols will still occur. And our forces will wait nearby to respond to Iraqi calls for support. But the last of the bases and US-only outposts within Iraq’s urban centers will be vacated.

Thursday, June 25th, 2009Senate Ethics Committee
Wednesday, June 24th, 2009How is it that the people in charge of investigating ethics issues in the Senate are the Senators themselves? These are the idiots we want running health care, I think not.
Regardless of the outcome of an Ensign probe, however, we are concerned that — as blogger Paul Blumenthal has written on the Web site of another watchdog group, the Sunlight Foundation — the Senate Ethics Committee is “a black hole where investigations go to die.”
The committee never took action in the case of former Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), despite abundant evidence that an oil contractor rebuilt his house and gave him other gifts never reported on his financial disclosure forms.

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009CBO Grossly Underestimates Costs of Cap and Trade
Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009Last week, the Congressional Budget Office released their analysis of the Waxman-Markey climate change bill that had proponents of the bill claiming we could save the planet for just $175 per household. That was the figure CBO estimated cap and trade would cost households in 2020, which “includes the cost of restructuring the production and use of energy and of payments made to foreign entities under the program, but it does not include the economic benefits and other benefits of the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and the associated slowing of climate change.”
The trouble with the analysis is that costs are grossly underestimated. The trouble with legislation is that it will have virtually no impact on climate.

The moderate Iranian leader who says that he was robbed of victory in last week’s presidential election faces a fateful choice today: support the regime or be cast out.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, has told Mir Hossein Mousavi to stand beside him as he uses Friday prayers at Tehran University to call for national unity. An army of Basiji — Islamic volunteer militiamen — is also expected to be bussed in to support the Supreme Leader.

Bush takes swipes at Obama policies – Washington Times
Thursday, June 18th, 2009Bush takes swipes at Obama policies – Washington Times
Former President George W. Bush fired a salvo at President Obama on Wednesday, asserting his administration’s interrogation policies were within the law, declaring the private sector — not government — will fix the economy and rejecting the nationalization of health care.
“I know it’s going to be the private sector that leads this country out of the current economic times we’re in,” the former president said to applause from members of a local business group. “You can spend your money better than the government can spend your money.”
